Joe Mihevc has served as Councillor for the former City of York and now the new City of Toronto for the last 21 years, bringing his deep concern for social issues in advocating for stronger neighbourhoods, healthy communities, clean environment and safe streets.
As a City Councillor in York, and now Toronto, his accomplishments in the community include building the new Artscape Wychwood Barns and park project, the Oakwood Village Library and Arts Centre, the creation of Roseneath Park, convincing City Council to adopt a City-wide Ravine protection by-law and a City-wide regulation of drive-thrus in mixed residential-commercial areas, saving the historic Witt streetcar, securing a home for the heritage Tollkeeper’s Cottage and the restoration of the historic Connaught Gates.
As Chair of the Board of Health from 2000 to 2003, Joe Mihevc led the implementation of the green-yellow-red restaurant disclosure system and the smoking by-law, the adoption of a pesticide by-law, invested in control measures to prevent the spread of West Nile Virus and managed the SARS outbreak.
Joe also chaired the City’s Community Services Committee, the Roundtable on Access and Equity and Human Rights, the Disability Issues Committee, the Ethics Steering Committee and World Youth Days 2002.
Currently, Joe sits on the Community Development and Recreation Committee and on the Toronto Board of Health.
Joe and his family moved from Winnett Avenue to their current home on Humewood Drive in 1993. Joe has lived in this area of Toronto for more than 50 years, being born and raised near Dufferin Street and Eglinton Avenue West.
Joe is married to Rosalee Bender. With over twenty years of experience in education and community development, Rosalee has worked in Canada, Brazil and the Dominican Republic. She has a B.A. (History), B.Ed.(Education) and M.A.(Theology). In Toronto, she has worked at the Jane/Finch Community and Family Centre, the North York Women’s Centre, and East York East Toronto Family Resources.
Joe’s son, Justin, is married to Lisa Doyle. Justin teaches in the social sciences department at Neil MacNeil Secondary School. Lisa is a registered massage therapist and teaches grades 2 and 3.
Krista is in Grade 12 at Oakwood Collegiate and is active in both theatre and sports.
Catherine is in Grade 8 at Winona Dr. Public School. She loves school, and she loves her extra-curricular Musical Theatre class at the Randolph Academy!
