Press Release.
Councillor Joe Mihevc and the Hillcrest Village and Wychwood Heights Business Improvement Areas announced on March 28 that Michele Van Maurik won the “Shop St. Clair” poster design contest. Van Maurik’s artwork will be featured on hundreds of lawn and window signs in the St. Clair neighbourhood to encourage residents to shop locally during construction.
“The signs will be a great reminder for residents to support their local businesses during the transit improvement construction and beyond,” said Councillor Mihevc (Ward 21, St. Paul’s West). “The construction is key to the renaissance on St. Clair, and so is the need for residents to support the local merchants that help the community thrive.”
The goal of the initiative is to double efforts by residents to shop locally during third phase of the St. Clair transit improvement construction, which begins in late spring. The contest, a joint effort between Councillor Mihevc and the BIAs, was launched in early February. Representatives of the BIAs selected the winner earlier this month.
Van Maurik’s winning design features a bright red background with the slogan, “Shop on St. Clair—Show you care!” Eight designs, including Van Maurik’s, were submitted to the contest.
“As a long time resident of this community, I’ve seen St. Clair evolve into a very hip and artistic area and I am excited to be able to contribute to the promotion of that,” said Van Maurik. “I’m glad to be a part of the reinvention of St. Clair.”
Van Maurik is painter, mural artist and an active member of the community.
“I want to say congratulations to Michele,” said Tony Bassels, Wychwood Heights BIA Chair. “She really captured the spirit of the community—that we care.”
Victor Cappella, Co-Chair of the Hillcrest Village BIA, added, “We’re looking forward to people coming to St. Clair to shop, buy and eat. We have so much to offer.”
Councillor Mihevc and the BIAs made the announcement at Hillcrest Village BIA Co-Chair Frank Pronesti’s restaurant, The Rushton (740 St. Clair Ave. W.). The councillor and BIAs also thanked everyone who submitted designs to the contest.
Residents will be able to pick up the free signs at Councillor Mihevc’s community office (747 St. Clair Ave. W.) beginning in June. Between 300 and 500 signs will be printed.
